Island Games: Jersey golfer suspended for one day after playing illegal practice round

Rules of the competition stipulate that unofficial practice rounds are not allowed to be played before the course has been used and Parkman fell foul of that rule last night.

Robbie Messervy, Jersey’s team manager, said: ‘It was a rule I did not know; Matthew asked if he could go out last night and I said “yes”, not knowing the rule.

‘We are playing in a 72-hole competition this week and we are not used to playing 72-hole competitions so we are unfamiliar with the rules.

‘I reckon 80 per cent of golfers playing this week did not know this rule until now and I’m sure everyone knows it now.’

Parkman’s suspension is for today only. Obviously missing 18 holes today will put him out of contention in the individual competition.

When Parkman’s action restarts tomorrow he will be able to contribute to the team as the players’ best three scores from four count towards the team medals.
