Full sail for Bermuda

Yesterday it was confirmed that the indoor volleyball teams would join football and basketball in not attending the Games in Bermuda, and the athletics squad is likely to send severely depleted numbers.

However, the teams in swimming, shooting, sailing and squash will be as big as for the Isle of Wight Games last year.

David Carter, the sailing team manager, said: ‘There is always going to be a problem with sport in Jersey in that if you want to compete at a high level you have to travel outside of the Island and that incurs costs.

‘Those issues are always going to be there, whether it’s travelling to the UK for competition, or in this instance Bermuda.

‘It’s not the easiest Games to get to and we have had a few more expenditure issues, but there is nothing to suggest that we shouldn’t have a strong team.’
