Donald Trump brands Puerto Rico infrastructure ‘a disaster’ before Maria struck

President Donald Trump has criticised hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico, saying the government cannot keep US federal aid there “forever”.

Mr Trump criticised the US territory in a series of tweets on Thursday.

He said there is a “total lack of accountability” and “electric and all infrastructure was disaster before hurricanes”.

The president added: “We cannot keep Fema, the Military & the First Responders, who have been amazing (under the most difficult circumstances) in P.R. forever!”

Fema is the Federal Emergency Management Agency responsible for dealing with disasters.

The House is on track to back Mr Trump’s request for billions more in disaster aid, 16 billion US dollars to pay flood insurance claims and emergency funding to help the cash-strapped government of Puerto Rico stay afloat.

Hurricane Maria struck on September 20. It has killed at least 45 people, and about 85% of Puerto Rico residents still lack electricity.
