Varadkar says Trump visit to Ireland could be chance for president to see border

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said the invitation for President Donald Trump to visit Ireland still stands and it might be an opportunity for him to visit the border with Northern Ireland.

But Mr Varadkar said he will not be playing golf with him if the US president does make the trip.

Former taoiseach Enda Kenny invited Mr Trump to Ireland in the White House when he made the annual St Patrick’s Day trip this time last year.

“Donald Trump has invited me to Washington DC. I’m here this week,” the Taoiseach said.

“He’s going to invite me to his house.

The US president owns the Trump International Golf Links and Hotel in Doonbeg in Co Clare.

Mr Varadkar added: “I’m not into golf, so I won’t be playing golf with him if he comes to Doonbeg but perhaps it would be an opportunity for him  to potentially visit some of the Irish companies that invest in the US and also perhaps even to see the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland.

“I know that something he has expressed an interest in.”

The Irish Premier said there has been no discussions about such a visit at this stage.
