WET and windy conditions did not deter a hardy group of Islanders from walking in the footsteps of the Jersey Militia on Saturday morning to mark the 242nd anniversary of the Battle of Jersey in 1781. Led by local historian Ian Ronayne, the group set off from St John’s Church, stopping at Le Couvent and Westmount on their way into town. They were given a very informative talk along the route, before arriving at the scene of the battle in the Royal Square. Here, the 1781 Jersey Militia fired two musket volleys and volunteers from the crowd restaged John Singleton Copley’s famous painting of the event, The Death of Major Peirson.
