Jersey tractor wins award at world’s largest steam fair

The victorious vehicle was an IH 444 driven by Derek Vivian, who travelled to the event with Sam Pallot on his IH B275.

The pair took the ferry to Poole, via Guernsey, where they were joined by Graham Dorey with his Nuffield M5 and Ian Carre with his David Brown 800.

The 20-mile road run up to Tarrant Hinton with these four classic tractors went smoothly and took approx 90 minutes.

The IH 444 was chosen for the award from 500 tractors in various classes at the Show, which was attended by well in excess of 200,000 people over the five days.

Held on the site of a working farm and covering a vast area of 650 acres, this is the largest steam fair in the world, and for this special anniversary the organisers managed to assemble over 500 steam engines – breaking the Guiness World Record.

Many Channel Islanders travelled over to enjoy the annual event which celebrates heavy haulage, military, classic and commercial vehicles and includes stunt shows, working horses, rural crafts and much more.

Pallot Steam Motor and General Museum host the annual Steam Motor and Threshing Fayre tomorrow between 10 am and 5 pm. There will be train rides, steam threshing, 30-plus tractors, displays from a number of classic car clubs, including 18 French vintage cars in the morning, a Land Rover demonstration, Jersey wonders and other refreshments and stalls.

On the Sunday morning the Jersey Classic Vehicle Club is holding a tractor run which will include a good number of visiting tractors from Guernsey. Meeting at the car park opposite Les Fontaines Tavern on Route du Nord at 9.45 am, the convoy will be leaving at 10.15 am.
