Top honours for hotel worker

Mr Paksai, who came to Jersey 11 years ago, has worked at the L’Horizon for the past seven years, starting as a barman and working his way up. He was described in the nomination as ‘always cheerful, positive, a real team player [who is] happy to go the extra mile’.

He was last month presented with the award and a cash prize by Julia Hands, owner of the Hand Picked Hotels group, which also includes the Grand Jersey, the St Pierre Park in Guernsey and 17 hotels in the UK. ‘It is a tremendous honour to receive this award, having been up against so many strong candidates across the group,’ Mr Paksai said. ‘I came to the Island 11 years ago and loved being part of the team at L’Horizon so much that I never left. I’m really proud to be recognised for the job I do – one I really enjoy.’ Simon Miller, general manager of Hand Picked Hotels in Jersey, said: ‘Tamas is one of those often unsung heroes, the glue that makes things happen, generally behind the scenes, without any fuss or prompting. His input into the business is visible in virtually every department, helping the team ensure that the guests’ experience is positive and seamless. He consistently gives 110 per cent every day and is a worthy winner.’

During the presentation, held at the Buxted Park Hotel in East Sussex, the L’Horizon also won the Most Consistent Hotel award for the third time and was recognised for gaining four AA Red Stars in 2017.
