Islanders offered chance to recapture the magic of childhood with vintage Jersey carousel

A FAIR ride owner is giving Islanders the chance to buy a piece of their childhood – after deciding to sell a vintage carousel ridden by tens of thousands of youngsters over the years.

The ride, which was built in 1895, was previously a star attraction at Fort Regent’s Fantastic Tropical Gardens during the 1980s and 90s before it was bought by Damian Smith, who restored it and took it to various summer events.

Mr Smith (68), who is from the north-east of England, worked as a magician in hotels in the Island and bought the carousel from former Fantastic Tropical Gardens owner Gary Parkin about 15 years ago.

He spent two years restoring it and added a couple of new horses – which were sourced in Germany.

‘It was a joy to see the kids’ faces as they went around,’ said Mr Smith.

After announcing his retirement, he said he wanted to sell the carousel to someone who would look after it and he hoped that, as a piece of Jersey’s heritage, it would remain in the Island.

The carousel, which is normally kept in storage, will be on display at the annual Summer Country Fair at the Royal Jersey Showground in Trinity this weekend. Mr Smith said that he is open to offers, and anyone interested can contact him on 07797 775457.
