Large navigation buoy washes up on Jersey beach

A LARGE navigation buoy washed up on the beach at Grève d’Azette on Saturday morning in rough conditions.

The East Rock buoy was left stranded by high tides after breaking loose from its mooring chain.

A Ports of Jersey spokesperson said: ‘From time to time during periods of rough seas, the buoys’ anchor chains break, and they drift free.’

A crane was later used to retrieve the buoy.

The spokesperson added: ‘It will be returned to its position when the weather and sea conditions are favourable. In the meantime, a navigation warning is broadcast by Jersey Coastguard and St Helier VTS to inform shipping that this buoy is ”missing”.’
