THE police are seeking to reassure victims of sexual offences that they will be taken seriously if they come forward – with today marking the start of Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week.
The national campaign aims to raise awareness of the support available to those affected by sexual abuse or sexual violence, and empower them to seek help should they need it.
Throughout the week, agencies involved will be sharing information with the hashtag ‘itsnotok’.
Acting Superintendent Craig Jackson said: ‘It takes a lot of courage for a victim of sexual abuse or violence to come forward and report it, whether that be to the police or another agency. Our message is clear, we are here to help you, support you, and make sure you have all the care you need.’
Every year an average of 131 sexual offences are reported to the States police, but it is believed that many more go unreported.
The force is seeking to reassure people that if they report any form of sexual offending, they will be taken seriously and listened to.
