THE occupants of a flat needed medical treatment after a blaze broke out in their home.

Fire crews were met with thick black smoke after being called to the third-floor apartment in St Helier at about 11pm on Tuesday.

The occupants evacuated the property but needed treatment from firefighters before paramedics arrived.

Their current condition is not known.

The flat suffered ‘severe fire and smoke damage’, Jersey Fire and Rescue Service said.

The blaze, which broke out in the kitchen, is not being treated as suspicious.

Jersey Fire and Rescue said they ‘would like to praise the initial actions of the occupants of the building for a speedy and efficient evacuation prior to our arrival’.

They added: ‘We would also like to thank both States of Jersey Ambulance Service and States of Jersey Police for their assistance in dealing with this incident.’
