A YACHT with a fuel leak avoided getting grounded in Portelet Bay after being rescued by the RNLI.

The St Helier all-weather lifeboat was called out at about 11.40am on Saturday to help the vessel, which had six people on board, including a child.

The yacht’s crew reported that they had just three metres of water below their keel in an outgoing tide.

In a Facebook post, the RNLI said: ‘The casualty crew were able to start their engines and so they were requested to head south into more open water.

‘Once on scene it was established that the safest course of action was to tow the vessel back to St Helier after it was confirmed that the fuel leak did not make it dangerous to bring the vessel into the Harbour.

‘As the casualty crew were safe and well, and the conditions benign, they stayed on board their yacht.

‘A tow was established and the vessel was taken back to St Helier.’
