A MAN who caused £2,000 worth of damage to the exterior of a recently opened St Helier restaurant after he was refused entry has been told to leave Jersey and not come back for at least three years.

The Magistrate’s Court heard yesterday that Saqueel Karim (28) had come to the Island from the UK to work at this year’s Battle of Flowers, and tried to enter Colmar Brasserie, in Broad Street, at 10.45pm on the evening of 5 August.

Legal adviser Harrison Gollop, prosecuting, said Karim had been seen outside shirtless, kicking bins and behaving in a disorderly manner so staff refused to allow him in.

‘He ripped down the awning and customers heard a loud crack as it hit the window,’ Mr Gollop said.

Karim was arrested the following morning at the Mornington Hotel, where he was staying.

In court yesterday, he admitted the charge of malicious damage.

As well as being ordered to stay away from Jersey for the next three years, Karim was told to pay £200 towards the repairs, the balance of which will be covered by insurance.

Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris told him: ‘We don’t mind anyone coming to work in Jersey but when they come, we don’t want them doing this sort of thing.

‘If you return within three years, you will find yourself arrested and you’ll be back here.’
