A SEVEN-BEDROOM luxury mansion above Rozel Bay, dubbed a ‘Marmite’ house by an estate agent, has sold for £8.75 million – more than a decade after going on the market for £15m.

Carteret House, which features an infinity pool, uninterrupted views of France, a six-car garage and cinema, first went on sale around 2009.

Roger Trower, owner of Broadlands, who acted as agents for the sale, said the original price may have restricted the number of potential buyers.

He said: ‘It was one of those houses which was a bit like Marmite – you either liked it or you did not.

‘If you were to put it in the south-west part of the Island, like in St Brelade’s Bay, it probably would have sold a long time ago.

‘But the price point on it was fairly high and there are only so many people coming over here that are willing to spend £15 million on a home.

‘That is not a reflection of the rest of the market as such – the market is very buoyant at the moment – but this house just did not tick all the boxes for everybody.’

Not long after its construction, developers spent more money on the property – which occupies the former Bistro Frère site – replacing its roof and increasing its height.

Mr Trower added that the new owners were also planning to carry out more work.

‘Originally the roof-line was too low so the person who funded the development and originally owned the property pushed the roof up and created a much better bedroom situation. The old arrangement just did not work for that sort of money,’ he added.

‘That is it really. It just took time to sell.

‘The property is extremely good value and the new owners now want to put their own mark on it and I am sure they will do a good job and make it right for their family.’
