‘Singing Postman’ to stand in Grouville

A FARMER – who was once dubbed the Singing Postman – has confirmed his intention to stand as Grouville Constable in this year’s general election.

Mark Labey described himself as a born-and-bred Grouville man, who felt that it was a ‘good time’ to stand, with the support of his wife Collette and three children.

Current Constable John Le Maistre confirmed in October last year that he would not seek re-election, saying it had been an honour to have served the parish.

Mr Labey, who is the father of former EastEnders star Jonny Labey, said his ‘first love’ was in the family business of farming, which he has been involved in for over 20 years, joining the Young Farmers Club and eventually going on to be its chairman.

He has also been chairman of the Grouville Battle of Flowers Association, of which he is currently an honorary treasurer.

Mr Labey said: ‘I learnt first-hand through the Battle of Flowers about the wonderful sense of community, dedication and hard work that exists in Grouville. If elected, I intend to bring these qualities to the role of Constable.’

A well-known performer on Island stages, Mr Labey is a member of Jersey Green Room Theatre Company, the Jersey Amateur Dramatics Club, St Martin’s Musical Society and sings in Jersey Big Band.

He has also worked for Jersey Post, with his love of performing leading to him being labelled as ‘the singing postman’.

Jersey’s general election takes place on 22 June this year.
