Prizes are dished out for bucketloads of potatoes

Sponsored by the Channel Islands Co-operative Society, the annual event saw politicians, local schools and media representatives try to out-grow each other with seed potatoes provided by The Jersey Royal Company.

Out of 33 competing schools, Year 3 at St John’s School won the heaviest-crop award with a result of 1.271kg, while class 2G at Grouville Primary School won the most-tubers award with 62.

The eastern parishes claimed a decisive victory in the politicians’ competition, with Grouville Constable John Le Maistre achieving the heaviest crop at 1,371.5kg, and St Martin Constable Karen Shenton-Stone yielding the most tubers with 31.

In the media category, Channel TV’s Becky Lancashire won the heaviest-crop award at 1,282.3kg and JEP reporter James Jeune won the most-tubers award, yielding 38 Jersey Royals.

John Garton, the chief executive of Genuine Jersey, said: ‘It’s fantastic to see so many people in person for this year’s weigh-in after last year’s virtual meeting.

‘It’s great to once again be able to see the sense of pride from all competitors.’

He added: ‘It doesn’t matter if a bucket has five or 55 Jersey Royals in it, it is clear to see that entrants have found joy in growing their potatoes and are always excited to see what the next bucket reveals. The Jersey Royal really is the star of the show.’
