Charities hope virtual event is runway success

The Ports of Jersey Runway Challenge 21 is a virtual event, which will take place between 11 and 21 July, in which participants are invited to complete the distance of a chosen runway in any way they want.

This could include running, walking, cycling, swimming, kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding.

The 21 runway destinations have been selected from Jersey Airport’s proposed summer 2021 route network, based in the British Isles and European cities.

Participants can enter individually and cover a single runway or a group of runways ranging from 10km to 45km. They can also complete the full 21 runways, which adds up to over 100km. There is also the option to enter in groups of five.

The event replaces Ports of Jersey’s usual fundraiser, which allows local charities to run the length of the Jersey Airport runway. However, this was not possible this year due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Commenting on the fundraising challenge, Matt Thomas, chief executive of Ports of Jersey, said: ‘We have put together what we believe is a fun and family-friendly event which we hope will be supported by the local community, especially in these challenging times. From feedback we receive, so many people would love the idea of running the distance of our runway. While this is not possible this year we hope we’re giving them an alternative to do the very next best thing and if it proves successful, it’s something we’d like to build on in the future.’

The money raised from the event will be donated to four charities – Beresford Street Kitchen, Caring Cooks of Jersey, Dementia Jersey and Healing Waves.

Registration is now open and costs £5 for juniors, £10 for individual entries and £20 for those taking on the full 21 runways. Relay registration costs £75.
