Fire closes road in St Helier

Firefighters were called to Midvale Road at around 6.50pm on Saturday following reports of smoke coming from a three-storey building.

Two fire engines attended and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and discovered a fire on the ground floor at the back. No one was in the property at the time.

In a statement the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘Once the fire was extinguished a positive pressure ventilation fan was put in place to clear the remaining smoke from the property. Crews remained on scene to dampen down and remove fire damaged electrical appliances.’

It added: ‘The property was empty at the time of the incident and the cause is currently being investigated but early indications suggest accidental due to a possible electrical issue.’

The road was closed in both directions for a time.
