EU ‘settled status’: Time running out

It was estimated that there may be around 20,000 EU nationals in Jersey when the scheme opened two years ago – with just over 16,000 people having applied so far. Under the scheme, EU citizens living in Jersey will need to register for ‘settled status’ to remain in the Island as a result of Brexit. The scheme does not apply to British or Irish nationals.

Home Affairs Minister Len Norman said: ‘All EU nationals, other than Irish nationals, living in Jersey before the end of 2020 and wishing to remain in Jersey must apply to the settlement scheme. Those who do not apply to the settlement scheme by 30 June 2021 will be in the Island unlawfully which may lead to removal from Jersey. Not joining the scheme will affect their ability to travel and to access jobs, housing, free healthcare and benefits.

‘Those who have not yet applied are strongly urged to do so in good time. As long as an application is received by 30 June 2021 rights to continue living and working in Jersey will be protected.’

A government spokesperson said that ‘we are now averaging just under 50 new applications a week’ and that the Customs and Immigration Service had been discussing with employers, community groups, charities and associations to ensure that all EU national residents living in Jersey are aware of the rules.
