Former head of civil service takes on new responsibilities

NewRiver announced in a statement at 11.30am yesterday that Mr Parker had been appointed as a member of its remuneration and audit committees with effect from 1 April.

The non-executive role had been the source of controversy since first being revealed by the JEP last October, with several States Members and many other Islanders stating that it was inappropriate for the Island’s leading civil servant to take up a ‘second job’.

The government’s initial response to the allegations failed to make clear whether Mr Parker had the required permission to take up the role, with the resulting row leading to a vote of no confidence in Chief Minister John Le Fondré over his handling of the affair.

On the eve of the vote, which was defeated by 29 votes to 19, Mr Parker resigned as chief executive, a position he had taken up in January 2018.

Mr Parker initially stated that he would remain in the role for as long as his employer required, and it was subsequently agreed that his final day of employment with the
Government of Jersey would be 31 March.
