The Bailiff, Timothy Le Cocq, has already made it clear that any larger celebrations planned for the 75th anniversary last year could not take place before 2022 but consideration is still being given to the format of this year’s commemoration.

Steve Cartwright, chief officer in the Bailiff’s Chambers, said that they were in discussion with the government’s advisory group, the Scientific and Technical Advisory Cell, about the extent of any event which might be possible on
9 May.

‘We expect to be in a position to make an announcement relating to Liberation Day and also to other public events in the near future,’ he said.

Last year most of the events which had been planned to mark the 75th anniversary were cancelled because of pandemic restrictions, and replaced by a virtual celebration which saw the traditional Bailiff’s address streamed from a balcony above the Royal Square and filmed footage of the Liberation Square flag-raising.

Among the small number of planned public events which did take place were the Face of Liberation project, culminating in a display along the Esplanade, and the St Lawrence community exhibition, which is still on display at the Moignard Liberation Gardens.
