Reform Jersey to become ‘opposition’ to government

Reform Jersey has announced its decision to form an official ‘opposition’ to the government following a recent vote of no confidence in Chief Minister John Le Fondré that saw two of the party’s members – Senator Sam Mézec and Deputy Montfort Tadier – resign from their ministerial and assistant minister roles respectively so that they could support the move.

The party’s leader, Senator Mézec, said that although the vote did not succeed it showed that a ‘large proportion’ of the States Assembly had lost faith in the Chief Minister’s leadership and that there was ‘widespread disillusion amongst the public’.

‘Reform Jersey was right to support the vote of no confidence in the Chief Minister, as his leadership on key issues facing Islanders has been weak and he has failed to deliver on the ambitions in the Common Strategic Policy and our agreement with him on the formation of a government after the last election,’ said Senator Mézec.

‘The last straw was his shambolic handling
of the recent crisis with the chief executive officer.’

He added that having resigned from their ministerial roles, the party’s members had more time and energy to direct into ‘organising ourselves in response to the government’.

‘For the next 18 months until the 2022 election we will work hard to hold the government to account and seek to deliver on our manifesto commitments to improve the standard of living for Islanders, and to ensure that our recovery following the coronavirus pandemic is based on our “New Deal for Jersey” proposals. We will be lodging several propositions in the coming months to that effect.

Party members have therefore been assigned their own opposition portfolios as listed below.
