The new Salvation Army shop in Minden Street is next to the organisation’s offices and close to its charity shop, which remains closed after being deemed unsafe following the discovery last month of the cracks, the potential causes for which remain unknown.
To the rear of the building is Le Masurier’s 149-unit Merchant’s Square development, where demolition work was recently carried out.
Part of the Salvation Army building has reopened, but the charity shop and one of the larger community halls upstairs remain closed.
The community centre manager for the Salvation Army in Jersey, Emily Smith, said the pop-up shop would allow the charity to continue to provide support despite the challenges created by the building that houses their charity store.
‘We are so excited to open our pop-up shop, which will remain open now until Christmas.
‘It is with great sadness that our existing shop has to remain shut as it is deemed unsafe since cracks started to appear in the back wall of our building. We have been told by structural engineers to keep the shop shut, but we really wanted to get our volunteers back and try to open another space for our customers to come in, browse and find some bargains.’
She added: ‘We rely on the hard work of our volunteers and have a team of dedicated helpers who can’t wait to get back. The shop is much more than a place to find a bargain and we have a number of customers who often come in for a chat and to see a friendly face. This is why we have worked hard to open a new space.
‘All the money raised in the shop directly helps those in Jersey who need the support of the Salvation Army. We also pride ourselves on offering good-quality, reasonably priced clothing and household goods for those who may be on low incomes.
‘We hope everyone enjoys the new space and we can’t wait to see some familiar faces again and welcome new customers.’
The shop is open on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10am until 2pm.
Donations of clothes and Christmas items are welcome, but the shop is unable to take large household goods and toys because of limited space.
All shoppers are being asked to maintain social distancing.
