The St Brelade’s Bay Association say they want to ensure the next Island Plan stops planning policies from allowing large-scale projects, and have launched an online petition in an attempt to preserve its tourist sites and enable ‘sensitive development’.
The group had also been encouraging Islanders to take part in a separate survey on the bay, that closed last month, as it feared that the government would allow the spread of luxury-housing developments unless residents made their voices heard.
Now, association chairwoman Moz Scott says that the group is ‘somewhat alarmed’ by two recent government publications, the Landscape and Seascape Assessment and the Island Plan Review Preferred Strategy Report, which she claims shows
that public intentions were not being respected.
Ms Scott says the former document ‘contemplates more development on the lower slopes of the bay and fails to mention the role of the sites along the seafront in supporting its landscape setting’.
She also says that the strategy report ‘failed to acknowledge responses to the public consultation and Coastal
National Park workshop seeking to steer development away from St Brelade’s Bay’.
The association believes the petition will help make a firm statement about the bay’s future and encourage debate on potential developments. ‘The petition gives Jersey’s public an opportunity to express how
they feel about the failure of planning
policies to ensure a treasured seaside resort is developed sensitively, with the
public’s enjoyment in mind,’ added Ms Scott.
‘It also allows the public to express objections to government’s process for producing planning policy generally.’
