Covid response: Future benefit for charitable volunteering?

Malcolm Ferey believes that as Islanders and organisations have adapted to the Covid-19 restrictions, the improved support mechanisms put in place could lead to a more inclusive Island.

With a number of Islanders dedicating time to assist with the Covid-19 response, Mr Ferey hopes that charitable organisations could see a long-term benefit if people continue volunteering.

‘When it comes to that phrase ‘‘the new normal’’, my belief is that you cannot go back to a new normal. Therefore we can only all collectively move forward,’ said Mr Ferey. ‘We have seen our community come together in the last few months in a way that has demonstrated just how resilient we can be when faced with a common and unseen enemy.

‘Many are now seeking to continue these charitable efforts and devote some time to worthwhile projects and to offer their skills to the many organisations that support the most vulnerable. Long may that continue.’

Mr Ferey suggested that with the ‘great reset’ brought about by Covid-19, many of the positive changes made by Islanders throughout the pandemic could continue.

‘Everyone should do their bit,’ he said. ‘If this reset is to be truly inclusive, we need to ensure that nobody in our society is left behind, that people continue to be supported and valued and that all our institutions are as accessible as they possibly can be.

‘There are many in our society who now want to live healthier, happier lives and although we have, so far, as a community been incredibly effective in suppressing the virus, let us not forget those who have lost loved ones, here and around the world.

‘They have an extra dimension to this whole situation that must make their ability to rebuild even harder to cope with. Our message, as always, is that help is available, either via our organisation or the many other services that are so prevalent on this island. Our parish networks and the support mechanisms that we have in place will continue to do the fantastic work they have always done.’
