Bus fares to increase at the end of this month

The company says the timetable will see a return to more frequent and later services as per previous winter timetables, however there will be reductions in peak services on some routes to reflect the changes in working patterns of commuters caused by the pandemic.

An adult cash fare will rise from £2.30 to £2.40 and cash fares for children will increase from £1.10 to £1.20. Adult AvanchiPAYG fares will rise from £1.65 to £1.75 and a monthly unlimited pass will rise from £50 to £51. Contactless payments remain frozen at £2.

Additionally, route 6 and route 11 services to Jersey Hospice and St Clement’s School respectively will no longer be running. Route 14 to St Brelade’s Bay will run throughout September in good weather only.

LibertyBus director Kevin Hart said: ‘We had agreed the changes to bus fares with the Infrastructure Minister earlier this year, however, by request of the minister when the pandemic hit, had delayed implementing them on 1 April as originally planned. The changes, which involve marginal increases in line with inflation, now need to be put in place in order to keep the bus service sustainable.

‘Many of our customers were already using contactless as their preferred method of payment and even more made the switch whilst we weren’t taking cash. Freezing the contactless fare at £2 for adults and £1 for children reflects this shift meaning most people’s bus fare hasn’t changed.’

The wearing of a face covering will still be a ‘condition of travel’.
