‘Winning made us feel our hard work was appreciated’

Staff at the La Collette Green Waste Facility and Reuse and Recycling Centre
won the JEP Pride of Jersey Customer Service Employee of the Year award and spokesman for the team, assistant manager Simon Brown, was keen to encourage more people to nominate their community heroes.

‘Do it. The whole department was delighted just to have been nominated and winning it made them feel that all their hard work was appreciated. It was a real boost to their morale and a third-party endorsement for the recycle centre,’ he said. ‘Good work ought to be rewarded and the awards are a real contributor to continuous improvement.’

Many Islanders to the sites will recognise the staff, who are out in all weathers to help residents dispose of their waste at the Green Waste Reception, which takes garden waste for composting, and the Reuse and Recycling Centre which accepts any recyclable household waste, and also contains the Acorn Reuse Centre.

The staff were nominated by Elaine Paisnel who praised the team for their friendliness, kindness and the way they always went out of their way to help without needing to be asked.

As well as being nominated and winning the award, members of the team also enjoyed a special evening held to honour their success, at which they were presented with their award.

Mr Brown said that the staff felt very proud to have been invited to the awards ceremony last year.

‘Everyone there really enjoyed the evening and it was acknowledgement of a job well done, by celebrating excellence, valuing human achievement and encouraging more of it.’

At last year’s ceremony each category winner also received a prize worth £1,000 from their sponsor, which the team is planning to use when the coronavirus crisis eases to support their education programme.

‘We decided to use the money to help schools to fund trips to the site, as for some schools the cost of hiring a coach or minibus is a barrier to bringing pupils to us for on-site learning. Due to Covid, we have not been able to spend the award money yet but it is still our intention to use it in this way. Once it is safe to do so, we are keen to continue to support schools in bringing the curriculum to life and so that’s how we’ll spend the money.’

The Customer Service Employee of the Year award was last year sponsored by Cherry Godfrey who are supporting the category once again in 2020.

‘As customer service is so important to us, we want to recognise those special people who consistently offer outstanding levels of customer service,’ a Cherry Godfrey spokeperson said. ‘Pride of Jersey is a fantastic event for Jersey, bringing all the community together to celebrate the remarkable achievements of the Islanders.’
