Islanders flee house after garden fire spreads to home

Firefighters from the Central and Western stations were called out at about midnight after receiving multiple calls about the blaze on Old St John’s Road.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the property and quickly extinguished the fire, which had already damaged the exterior walls and roof of the main house and adjoining flat.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a barbecue which had been left to go out in the garden.

The Jersey Fire and Rescue Service praised the actions of the occupants, who ensured the property was evacuated, raised the alarm and closed the rear door to the garden.

‘Their actions in this instance prevented a more serious fire taking hold to the actual property itself,’ the service said in a statement.

‘We would also like to remind members of the public to ensure that their barbecue is fully extinguished before going to bed and placed away from the side of walls, fences or other combustible materials,’ they added.
