Mixed response to eco-flats proposal

Dandara, who are behind the proposals, says the project has been designed with the aim of delivering ‘the highest standard of sustainability of a multi-occupancy development in Jersey to date’.

The developer also claims that the scheme will help Jersey’s economy amid the Covid-19 crisis by creating around 80 jobs, utilising local businesses and ensuring that ‘Jersey pounds are spent in Jersey’.

However, several objections – many from nearby residents – have now been lodged against the application.

One of those who commented, Joanna Jarvis, said: ‘The traffic is already busy on Route Orange. Adding an additional 18 flats would push the traffic to unacceptable levels and pose a danger to the nearby La Moye primary school and its attendees.

‘There is inadequate crossing [facilities] on the road to the school and the Morrisons shop. Adding additional traffic would be detrimental to not only the residents’ safety but to the safety of the children and staff at the school during pick-up and drop-off times.’

She added: ‘The environmental impact of having additional cars and residents in the area would also impact the local bird life and the nearby Le Creux Park nature reserve.’

However, some Islanders have spoken in favour of the application. Helier Falle said: ‘I would like to support this development. I think it is a very well designed scheme with good, well-thought-out landscaping.

‘It is a large site in a relatively built-up area and the existing building lends itself to be redeveloped to provide much-needed dwellings for the market place.’

He added: ‘All in all, I think Dandara have produced a nice scheme here.’

Dandara were contacted yesterday but declined to comment.

Elsewhere, a planning application to build a three-bed self-catering unit on the site of a former quarry overlooking St Ouen’s Bay has now received 97 public comments – with many objecting to the plans. Jonathan Ruff, the entrepreneur behind the idea, previously said the reaction to his project had been ‘blown out of proportion’.
