According to the agency, which broke the news just before 4pm, it was possible that the maximum temperature could go even higher as the day progressed.

The extreme weather is being caused by warm air being drawn up from Spain and today's figure tops the number reached on previous hottest day of the year when 32.7°C was recorded on 25 June.

It is expected that the warmth will continue into next week, with temperatures hovering between 27°C and 28°C.
