Hotter weather on the way

Statistics released by Jersey Met show that the Island’s average July temperature was 17.7°C, just below the 30-year average of 18.1°C.

Last month was significantly drier than usual, with just 10.8mm of rain falling – this compares with an average of 44.3mm. The lowest July figure on record was 7.4mm in 1949.

There were a total of 294 hours of sunshine across the month, which was around 30 hours above the 30-year average, and forecaster Matt Winter anticipated plenty more sunny days during the first week of August.

‘There’s very little, if any, rain in the forecast and from Thursday onwards we are looking at very warm conditions coming across from the continent,’ he said.

‘Friday and Saturday are both looking hot. We’re predicting 31°C on Friday and something close to that on Saturday.

‘The hot weather may extend into early next week, although there’s some uncertainty about the forecast from Sunday onwards.’

The hottest day of 2020 so far in Jersey was on 25 June, when a reading of 32.7°C was recorded. July’s peak came last Thursday with a maximum of 29.8°C.

The UK is also set for a hot spell of weather later this week, with temperatures of 32°C forecast for London on Friday and Saturday. This follows a reading of 37.8°C at Heathrow Airport last Thursday, close to the UK’s highest-ever temperature of 38.7°C, recorded in Cambridge on 25 July last year.
