Churchyard RNLI guard of honour takes newlyweds by surprise

Katie De La Haye and Andy Holloway got married at the Fishermen’s Chapel in St Brelade and were surprised when they walked out into the churchyard to see her work colleagues forming a guard of honour with boat oars.

Reflecting on the day, Mrs Holloway said: ‘Walking out to see my colleagues surprise us after our ceremony topped off the perfect day. My facial expressions said it all. Neither of us had any clue we would walk out to that.’

The couple originally planned to have a wedding with 100 guests but the wedding had to be scaled down due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Mrs Holloway said she could not have asked for a more perfect day despite the stress and challenges of organising a last-minute wedding.

The couple have spent the week at Greenhills Country House Hotel, using the staycation as an alternative honeymoon.

Mrs Holloway added: ‘The staycation has been amazing, the weather has been good and it feels like we have been on holiday. I am back to work today and I am curious to know how my colleagues pulled that off without me knowing.’

A spokesperson for RNLI Jersey said: ‘Katie has been a crew member for several years, and we are absolutely delighted her wedding could go ahead in spite of lockdown.

‘The images speak for themselves and are really moving. We are so glad the crew could come together and try to make her day extra special.’
