Schools to reopen to all pupils

Senator Tracey Vallois said the next phase of the return to school would commence on Monday 22 June.

The aim is for all primary pupils to be back in school full-time by the end of June, the minister said, with different year groups resuming classes on different days of the week from Monday.

There will be no social distancing at primary school level, while secondary school students will need to observe a one-metre physical distance.

And Senator Vallois said that all secondary school students would have ‘meaningful time’ in school prior to the start of the summer holidays on 16 July, with priority given to those who will transition to an older year group in September.

The minister added that her decision was supported by scientific guidance and advice that a two-metre physical distance no longer needed to be enforced in a school environment due to the risk of transmission from children being low.

Individual schools will provide details about the changes to parents, pupils and teachers.

It follows the return to school of Years 6, 10 and 12 earlier this month under social distancing measures.
