Deputy Inna Gardiner’s proposition calling for the move was passed in a series of votes with the new regime due to take effect next year.

The move will also see the introduction of minimum pricing for ‘bags for life’ following a consultation with those affected.

The Council of Ministers has been tasked with producing the necessary legislation to enact the changes by February 2021, allowing retailers at least six months to prepare for the new regime.
