COVID-19: Three more arrested for alleged lockdown breaches

Sergio Paulo Soares (47) and Helder Miguel De Freitas (39) have both been charged and bailed pending a court appearance after allegedly flouting laws during the Easter break when temperatures peaked in the mid-20s.

A third man was also arrested but has not been charged. Last week four others were fined between £300 and £500 each for breaking the Covid-19 laws.

Detective Mark Coxshall was on duty over the weekend and thanked the public for their support and States police and honorary officers for their work. Police officers from behind-the-scenes units including the Serious Crime Unit donned uniforms to help the force boost its visibility around the Island.

Over the weekend there were;

– three men arrested and two charged

– 124 premises were visits

– 103 stop checks carried out

– 178 words of advice issued

– 3,032 vehicles stops

Det Chief Insp Coxshall said: ‘It was an extended police operation in which officers and staff put in some really long hours and I am very grateful for that. I want to thank the honorary police, who came out in force across the Island, and also the public for their patience and understanding. I cannot underestimate my thanks to Islanders.’

The force have seen a drop in crime but an increase in demand to attend welfare and mental health incidents during lockdown. Reports of domestic abuse have also increased by 30%.
