Jersey Hemp turns its hand to sanitiser

The company usually produces CBD oil, but can switch to sanitiser as it already uses high-grade ethanol in its day-to-day work. The ethanol is mixed with aloe vera to produce the new product.

Jersey Hemp is aiming to produce 1,000 litres by the end of the week and is looking to source more ethanol to continue production after that.

Supplies of hand sanitiser across the Island have been running low.

Commercial director Craig Dempster said the company would not be making money on the product, but bosses and staff were keen to do something to help the Island during the current crisis.

He said: ‘We use high-quality ethanol in the normal course of our production to make CPD oil. So, a couple of weeks ago we sat down and had a chat and decided we could make sanitiser with the ethanol and aloe vera.

‘We should be able to produce around 100 litres a day. At the moment it is going in big containers as the dispensers were hard to source but we have got some coming in.

‘We are planning to make it available to care providers who are having to source it from other places. We won’t make any money on this.’

The firm is also putting a plan together to make the new hemp hand wash available in stores. Currently it will only be available in five-litre bottles until more smaller dispensers have arrived.

He added: ‘We are working on that at the moment because we want it to get to the right people who need it, and there is a shortage so everyone needs it.

‘The staff are really up for it, it is something that gives people a bit of a lift and it is nice to do something positive.’
