Islanders stranded in Bali arrive safely back in Jersey

Jon and Sandy Morgan made it back to their home in St Peter yesterday
morning after a journey back from the Indonesian island that took around 48 hours.

Following more than a week of frustration as they, and many other holidaymakers, were abandoned by Emirates airline as the Dubai-based carrier rapidly suspended services, the Morgans secured seats on a Singapore Airlines flight out of Bali on Saturday evening.

After landing at London Heathrow at around 7am on Sunday, the couple transferred to Gatwick.

‘It was really eerie driving in England – there was nothing on the roads apart from some taxis and a few lorries,’ said Mr
Morgan. ‘And Gatwick was like a scene from a zombie film. There was hardly
anyone there and virtually everything closed.’

Having originally thought they may be forced to spend 22 hours in the south terminal due to a lack of accommodation options, the Morgans found a hotel in East Grinstead, nine miles from Gatwick. They completed their return trip yesterday, on the last BA flight to operate on the Gatwick-Jersey route.

‘It’s brilliant to be back,’ said Mr Morgan, having moved immediately into self-isolation at home and being looked after by daughters Sophia and Gia.

Although some Britons remain stranded, the Morgans joined fellow Islanders Ross Pringle and Claudia-Rose Williams, who arrived home last Wednesday, in making it back to Jersey from Bali.

The Brits Stranded in Bali Facebook page has provided an online rallying point for many of those affected, with regular updates provided by British consular staff based in Bali and the Indonesian capital Jakarta.
