Time for a house party – social-distancing style

Well-known local DJ and civil celebrant DJ Nelson is launching the first of his Dining Room Discos via a live stream on his Facebook page, AANT ENTERTAINMENT, from 6pm.

The first hour will be aimed at children, followed by tunes for the adults until 8.30pm.

Earlier this week Nelson held a ‘doorstep disco’ for his daughter Ayisha’s 18th birthday.

Their neighbours in St Ouen followed social-distancing guidelines but came out of their homes to attend the party.

And now Nelson, who is also father to ten-year-old Sonny, wants to share the experience with others.

‘On Sunday one of our neighbours, Katrina de Gruchy, contacted my partner, Anne [Audrain], with a video of people singing along in the street somewhere and it kind of grew from there,’ he said.

‘Anne runs family events, like the family area at JL/Weekender and various others, so was keen to do something kid-friendly. Our daughter, Ayisha, is currently in Year 13 so has also been affected with her A-levels so with her birthday on the Wednesday it seemed like the right time to do something.

‘Anne put an invite through all our neighbours’ doors on Monday and had a great response. I played for just over an hour and the whole street came out, keeping social distance but able to party with their households.’

Nelson said the Dining Room Disco idea grew from there.

‘Anne thinks I’m going to be unbearable being home every weekend so suggested doing a live stream on a Saturday night instead and the Dining Room Disco idea was born.

‘We are overwhelmed by the response so far. I haven’t done anything live online before so we are keeping everything crossed that the tech works okay,’ he said.

‘All being well, people will just be able to come onto our page and join in. Anne’s going to man the comments so we can do requests and shout-outs.’
