Man hopes brother’s death from MDMA will be warning to others

The inquest into the death of Ashleigh Thomas Green (29) yesterday concluded that he had died from MDMA toxicity, after taking the drug at a friend’s birthday party.

His brother John Paul Green said he hoped Ashleigh’s death would make at least one person think twice about taking drugs.

He said: ‘You know, I really hope this is seen by others, and people will make the right decision.

‘Another lad passed away recently and I hope this makes people think about taking drugs. Ashleigh was loved and he is missed so much and his sudden death has had an effect. He was lovely, kind and caring.

‘I know it is difficult for people to see but I really hope at least one person makes the right decision.’

Police coroner’s officer Glenn Cleave told the inquest that an ambulance was called to a property in Clarendon Road, the home of Kieran Wisdom, on the morning of 18 August, after Mr Green was reported to have suffered a seizure.

He was taken to hospital and placed in the intensive care unit, where he was put on a ventilator. He suffered four cardiac arrests and his kidneys failed, before he died in the early hours of 19 August.

Witnesses at the party reported that Mr Green took around two grams of MDMA.

Paul Brady, a friend who attended the party with Mr Green, described how he began sweating and people used cold towels and ice to try to cool him down.

Other witnesses said he had a seizure and his muscles began to spasm, before an ambulance was called and he was taken to hospital.

Police went to Mr Wisdom’s property where they found cannabis and MDMA. He was subsequently charged and later sentenced to 150 hours of community service after admitting possessing cannabis with intent to supply and possession of MDMA. The police found no evidence that the drugs in his flat were linked to Mr Green’s death.

According to States analyst Dr Nick Hubbard, cannabis and cocaine were found in Mr Green’s system along with a ‘level of MDMA higher than that associated with recreational use’.

Deputy Viscount Mark Harris recorded a cause of death as ‘MDMA toxicity’.

The inquest comes after the States police launched Operation Shark last month in an effort to clamp down on drug dealing, in the wake of the death of another 19-year-old, James Bourgeois, who died from a suspected reaction to MDMA.
