Green Street ‘safety concern’ as drivers ignore new rules

Changes were made in November after the States passed a proposition by Deputy Russell Labey, who said that the move would ease the ‘dire traffic problem’ in the area.

Under the new system, apart from vehicles accessing the Cedars, Maison La Corderie or the Limes, no traffic is allowed to travel southbound – towards the sea – from the roundabout. Public buses and emergency vehicles are exempt from the new rules.

But in recent months, residents living on the street have reported seeing ‘Mexican stand-offs’, shouting and arguments between drivers ignoring and obeying the new system.

A post on the States police Facebook page this week reminded motorists of the one-way rules on Green Street and said they had received complaints that people were ‘continuing to misuse the road’.

LibertyBus has also appealed to the public to pay attention to the no-entry signs at the northern end of the street.

‘Our buses are consistently meeting other vehicles that are ignoring the one-way system on Green Street. We expected a period of transition where car drivers were getting used to the new flow of traffic, but the directions are still being ignored,’ a spokesperson from the company said.

‘Any situation where car drivers are going the wrong way down a one-way street with buses travelling in the opposite direction is a serious safety concern.

‘We would urge all drivers to follow the correct directions for their own safety as well as the safety of our passengers and pedestrians.’

St Helier honorary police have also begun carrying out patrols of the area and at least five people have been ordered to appear at parish hall inquiries as a result of breaching the new rules.
