Numerous Islanders had expressed their concerns that flags would be raised, despite recent revelations about the Duke of York’s private life. The Queen’s second son stepped back from royal duties last year in the wake of the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.

Backlash against the prince grew following a BBC interview in which he discussed his relationship with Epstein, a convicted sex offender.

Weeks after the media first asked the question as to whether flags would be raised in Jersey, a spokesman for the Bailiff’s Chambers said: ‘Following the decision by the Duke of York to step back from public duties for the foreseeable future, there is no longer a requirement for government and public buildings to fly the Union flag on Wednesday 19 February.

‘It should be noted that a number of buildings already fly the Union flag 365 days a year and will continue to do so.’
