Storm Ciara: Gale-force winds to strike at weekend

Storm Ciara – the third named storm of the season – is expected to barrel in from the Atlantic overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning.

The UK Met Office has issued a weather warning for the whole of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with forecasts of 80mph winds and heavy rain.

Jersey Met does not issue warnings so far in advance, but has confirmed that winds are likely to hit gale force eight by Sunday morning. Winds of at least strong force seven are expected to last until Tuesday.

The storm may also cause dangerous conditions around the coast, as the strong winds will coincide with a spring tide.

Neil Armstrong, chief meteorologist at the UK Met Office, said that an ‘extremely strong jet stream’ will steer a succession of low-pressure systems across the British Isles from the weekend.

‘The Met Office will continue to monitor the development of Storm Ciara and other potentially impactful low-pressure systems through next week,’ he said.

Storms are named when they are expected to cause widespread disruption. The first named storm of the 2019/20 season – Storm Atiyah – hit the British Isles on 8 and 9 December. It was followed by Storm Brendan on 13 and 14 January.
