A clean sweep: Toby (7) surveys ‘his’ road

But few children can say they are genuinely the king – or warden at least – of their own road. However, Toby Parker (7) is just that.

As part of St Ouen parish magazine Lé Gris Ventre’s Adopt a Lane scheme, the Les Landes pupil adopted Rue de la Gabourellerie – near his St Ouen home – with the help of his parents after they moved to the parish in 2016.

Since then, the young Islander has patrolled the road picking up litter and keeping the lane in tip-top condition.

His father, Lee, an insurance broker for Rossborough, said his son’s work had encouraged other children at school to do something similar.

‘We live on that lane and we thought this might be good for him,’ Mr Parker said. ‘He loves doing his bit for the parish.’

Lé Gris Ventre launched the Adopt a Lane scheme in 2005, thanks to work by the late Michael Ginns. Since then, numerous lanes have been adopted and wardens tasked with keeping them clean. For more information, contact Ken Syvret on 481043 or email kwsyvret@gmail.com.
