Cargo vessel returns to service after breakdown

Channel Seaways’ cargo vessel Valiant was towed to safety by Jersey’s Duke of
Normandy tug in a major operation involving a Guernsey pilot boat and the island’s workboat.

The 1,500-tonne vessel suffered steering problems during a crossing from Poole on Sunday and got into major difficulties off the coast of Herm.

Channel Seaways managing director Bruno Kay-Mouat said: ‘Specialist engineers arrived to rectify the steering gear and carry out further repairs on one of the schottels, which is part of the steering system.

‘This has all been fixed now and we were able to set sail again.’

The ship left Guernsey at 9am on Wednesday and arrived in St Helier just after 1pm.
