Staff lock themselves in office during attempted armed robbery

Staff at the Morrisons store on Gloucester Street were forced to lock themselves in an internal office during the alleged incident at around 10pm on Friday. No one was hurt.

According to the States police, the quick actions of the staff members meant the man left the shop empty-handed. Officers are now trying to trace a dark-coloured Mercedes car seen in the area before and after the incident.

In a statement, the force – which has released CCTV of the car – said: ‘A black or dark blue Mercedes, possibly a C class was seen on CCTV on the Inner Road at the roundabout at West Park (near the old Inn on the Park site) at approximately 9.45pm heading towards Cheapside, it drove past the Hospital and down Gloucester Street. It parked on Gloucester Street for approximately 20 minutes before driving down to the traffic lights and then heading west.

‘Police are looking for anyone in the area who may have dash cam footage or private CCTV of this car at around that time.

‘Police would like to speak to the driver of this car or with anyone who may have seen this incident, the man or the car or anyone who has any information about this.’

Anyone with information should contact police headquarters on 612612 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800555111 or via the online form at Crimestoppers-uk.org.
