Hospital on amber alert: Patients with norovirus urged to stay away

An amber alert remains in place, with one elective surgery case for a private patient being cancelled on Wednesday. Elective surgery for Thursday and Friday is due to go ahead as planned, but is being kept under review.

Several operations were cancelled earlier in the week.

Hospitals across the British Isles are facing similar problems.

Islanders with norovirus are now being urged to keep away from the Hospital to prevent increasing pressure on beds.

In a statement, the Government of Jersey said: ‘While the hospital does not have a norovirus outbreak, there are cases on the Island of a norovirus-like illness which is very contagious.

‘For this reason, any relatives or outpatients who are experiencing symptoms of diarrhoea and/or vomiting are asked to not attend the Hospital to help stop the spread of infection.

‘If a patient has an outpatient appointment that they need to re-schedule due to illness, they should phone the number on the appointment letter and the appointment will be rescheduled.

‘Islanders are reminded that it’s important to help maintain good hygiene that anyone visiting the Hospital washes their hands well before they visit as this is extremely effective at helping stop the spread of norovirus.

‘HCS are currently doing all they can to ensure that there is as little disruption to elective surgery in the coming days and weeks, and any patients whose elective operations could be affected are reassured that they will be contacted as soon as possible.’
