Large Jersey hotel could be demolished and replaced with flats

Under plans announced on Saturday, Westhill Country Hotel – a 173-bed hotel which sits in large grounds on Mont à l’Abbé – would be torn down to allow for the development of 51 apartments.

It would comprise six penthouse apartments, 30 two-bedroom apartments and 15 one-bedroom flats in landscaped gardens with underground parking.

The Smale family, who have run the business for the last six decades, said the hotel will remain open next year and for the foreseeable future, adding that they were only in the ‘preliminary stages of the planning process’.

In a statement, they said that the decision was due to ‘increasing demands on the industry, declining tourism, the age/design of the building and pressures on the family’.

A spokesman for the family said: ‘It is with a heavy heart that we have collectively decided that the hotel cannot remain as such in the long term and we have to explore another use for the property for the future.

‘We are only at the beginning of this journey and there is a long way to go.

‘Until then, we will continue to welcome locals and tourists to the hotel with all of the usual friendliness and professionalism that we have built our reputation on over the many happy years.’
