And the JEP has joined forces with the States police to publish a full-page poster urging Islanders to help detectives catch the culprit.

Shops and other businesses are being urged to cut out and display the poster – printed on page 9 of Tuesday's edition – as the investigation into the rape of a teenage student near Gorey Common bus stop enters its fifth day.

The States police are also printing versions of the poster and will be ‘displaying them in key locations’.

Today the force are urging anyone who was in Gorey last Thursday – Halloween – to come forward, even if they did not see anything suspicious.

Detective Superintendent Stewart Gull, head of crime services for the States police, said it was ‘not inconceivable’ the victim was followed by her attacker from a house in Gorey where she had been at a party with friends.

She left the property at 11.30pm and was on the way to the bus stop to meet her mother. The police believe the victim was captured on CCTV from a passing Liberty Bus at 12.06am.

Grouville Deputy Carolyn Labey told the JEP that the parish was reeling from the attack and concerns had been raised amongst local women.

Det Supt Gull said: ‘What we don’t want to do is unnecessarily raise fears of crime but of course we understand the concern of the immediate community and maybe other Islanders too.

'The attack and incidents of this nature, not just here but anywhere, are very rare. The vast majority of sexual assaults are between parties known to each other.

‘What I would say to people is take sensible precautions – as they would do on any other night – and make sure family and friends know where you are and what time you are due to return home. Make sure you have a mobile phone on you and that it is suitably charged.’
