Is this bream a record-breaker?

Pierre Joubert speared the monster 9lb 7oz gilt-head bream off Bordeaux, at the north-east tip of the island.

According to underwaterfishing.co.uk, the heaviest gilt-head bream caught in the British Isles is 8lbs 9oz. Although huge, Mr Joubert’s catch, which ended up on a barbecue, has not yet been officially declared the new British record.

‘Every now and then you get a fish of a lifetime. A moment in time that will stay with you a lifetime. Thank you Guernsey!’ he posted.

Commenters on Facebook congratulated Mr Joubert on his impressive catch that ‘smashed’ the British record.

‘From the moment I saw the fish to pulling the trigger I was overwhelmed with excitement,’ he told the Guernsey Press. ‘I didn’t realise how big it really was until I’d got it.’

He added: ‘Gilt-head bream only started coming into Guernsey waters in the last few years, they’re also on the coast of the UK as well. They’ve been immigrating from the Mediterranean and we’ve been seeing bigger and bigger ones over the years.’

Gilt-head bream commonly reach about 35cm in length and weigh a couple of pounds.
