Parkinson pulls out of festival

The 84-year-old had been due to take part in an evening at the Opera House, where he was to speak about his rise from a coal-pit village in Yorkshire to becoming the host of one of the most-watched Saturday night talkshows in Britain.

However, having been diagnosed with a mild medical condition, he has been told that he must rest. But Sir Michael has said he is hoping to return to the Island in the near future.

Jennifer Bridge, chairwoman of the Jersey Festival of Words, said that they were now looking for a replacement act.

‘Obviously we are really disappointed to learn that Sir Michael will be unable to attend this year’s festival,’ she said.

‘Full refunds will of course be offered to all those who bought tickets, and we thank all our supporters for their understanding.

‘Thanks also go to event sponsors Carey Olsen, who have been firm supporters of the festival since its inception, and to our friends at the Opera House, who will be contacting ticket-holders to organise refunds from Monday. We wish Sir Michael a speedy recovery.’

The show will still feature appearances from Blue Peter host Konnie Huq, comedian Jenny Eclair, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston – the first person to single-handedly sail around the world non-stop – and BBC Breakfast host Louise Minchin.
